Fifty years ago President Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law Day a "day of national dedication to the principle of government under law." We invite you this May to celebrate this enduring principle during the 50th anniversary of Law Day with the theme, The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity.

Law Day will take place on May 1, 2008.

The Women Lawyers of Utah Annual Fall Retreat will be held on October 19-20, 2007 at the Chateaux at Silver Lake in Deer Valley, Utah. Karen Lockwood, former President of the D.C. Women's Bar Association, will be the Keynote Speaker at this year's Retreat. She will speak about D.C.'s Initiative on Retention of Women in Law Firms.

The July 2007 Bar Exam Results have been posted. A joint admissions ceremony to the Utah Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court of Utah will be held on October 30, 2007 12:00 p.m. at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

The sixth annual Bar Sharks for Justice Pool Tournament is being held on October 10th and 17th, Wednesday evenings starting at 6:00 p.m. All matches will take place at Lumpy's Downtown - 145 Pierpont Ave., Salt Lake City. On the first Wednesday of each month, the Utah Young Lawyers Division holds its Executive Council Meeting. The primary purpose of this meeting is for the YLD officers and committee chairs to discuss and vote upon items that affect the young lawyers throughout the State.

However, this is certainly not a "closed-door" meeting. It is also a wonderful opportunity for any young lawyer to learn more about YLD and what YLD does. If you are interested in becoming more involved in YLD, this is a great chance to meet the officers and committee chairs, to listen to the different committees, and to hear about what types of activities/projects we have coming up. It is also a good opportunity to figure out what projects you may want to help with or what committee(s) you may want to join.

Next YLD Executive Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, 12:00 noon, at the Utah Law and Justice Center (645 South 200 East, Salt Lake City). Hope to see you there!

November is National Adoption Month. The Utah Adoption Council, along with help from the Needs of Children Committee of the Utah Young Lawyers Division, is hosting two events on Saturday, November 3, 2007. Both events will be held at Boondocks in Draper.

The first will be held from 9:30 a.m - 11:00. and is exclusively for families who are interested in adopting an older child. Families must be licensed through the state or close to it. Profiles and photos of waiting children in Utah will be available. Staff from both Utah's Division of Child and Family Services, as well as the Adoption Exchange, will be available to answer questions. More information is available here.

The second event will be held from 11:00 - 1:00 on that same day, also at Boondocks. This event is for everyone to celebrate adoption in general. Further information is available here.

The Needs of Children Committee needs two volunteers for this activity to help set up from 9:00 -11:00 and two volunteers to come at 12:45 to help with the take down. If you are interested in helping, contact David Johnson at davidlj@email.utcourts.gov.

The YLD is proud to sponsor the Young Lawyers High School Debate Tournament, Oct. 26-27 at West High School in SLC (note that this is a new location from years past), now in its third year, bringing together hundreds of Utah high school students for two days of team debate and speech events.

For generations, debate has served as a launching pad for students interested in becoming lawyers. YLD’s involvement with high school debate provides a positive first contact point between students and the Bar. Lawyers, former high school and college debaters, will judge team debate finals. YLD is recruiting sitting judges from Utah’s state and federal courts to judge public forum debate finals.
