New blog

Welcome to the new blog for the Young Lawyers Division of the Utah State Bar. In the next few weeks, we will continue to make several improvements to our website.

The first change you might notice is that our website is accessible through a new website address. We will now operate our website primarily through www.utahyounglawyers.org. We believe this change will bring more traffic since the new address is much more recognizable, memorable and easier to find.

The purpose of the blog is to quickly post anything of interest to the young lawyers. The blog will contain event notifications (including CLEs, social events, etc.), job postings and other items of general interest to young lawyers.

The success of the blog will depend in part on your help. If you have an event you would like to advertise to the almost 2,000 young lawyers in the State, let us know. We also need submissions for job postings.

You can send events and other possible postings to Craig Hall at craigh@wjordan.com or to Stephanie Pugsley (current President of the Utah YLD) at SPugsley@joneswaldo.com.

The leadership of the Utah YLD is committed to using the latest technology to increase awareness and communication to help all young lawyers throughout the State.

Notice to all U of U law alumni

A notice from the current Uta Law Review staff:

"In an effort to get to know our alumni better (and to infuse some fun into our otherwise dreary, copywork-riddled fall) we, the current Utah Law Review staff, cordially invite you and your family to join us for our beginning of the year BBQ on Friday, September 21, at Sunnyside Park in Salt Lake City from 5 pm - 8 pm.

"Sunnyside Park is located on 840 South, 1600 East. We have reserved a large pavilion with plenty of seating, eight BBQs, a playground, and several sports fields. The City of Salt Lake is graciously including a 'recreation kit' with our reservation, complete with softballs, footballs, soccerballs, volleyballs, and horseshoes, so there should be something entertaining for everyone. We will not be handing out any copyworking or editing assignments, and no official law review business will be transacted. Rather, this is just an effort to reconnect with as many of you as possible, so please feel free to stop by, even just for a little while.

"Please RSVP to MULLERLANDAUC@LAW.UTAH.EDU by Tuesday, September 18 to let us know whether you will be able to make it, how many family members you'll be bringing, and whether you'll be hungry so that we can ensure that there will be enough food and drinks for all.

We have tried our best to obtain the email addresses of as many of your co-staffmembers as possible, but there are many gaps in our records. If you are still in contact with other Utah Law Review alumni, please encourage them to attend."

Job posting - Clerkship with the Office of General Counsel for the U of U

The Office of General Counsel for the University of Utah is now accepting applications for a one-year clerkship to begin in the fall of 2008. The Office of General Counsel represents the legal interests of the University of Utah by providing detailed legal advice on a multitude of issues, including matters involving constitutional law, employment law, employee benefits, students, health law, immigration, business transactions, real estate and construction, software license agreements, intellectual property, privacy, and information security.

Similar to judicial clerkship positions, clerks for the Office of General Counsel will focus primarily on research and writing. In addition to refining research and writing skills, participants in the Office of General Counsel’s clerkship program will also have the unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into the internal operations of large, sophisticated corporate clients and their in-house legal departments. Those insights will enable clerks to better understand and better serve their own clients upon entering private practice. Additionally, clerks will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the Office of General Counsel’s work process. From the initial identification of legal issues, to the research that enables the proposal of solutions, to the implementation of those solutions, clerks will work alongside experienced attorneys, gaining practical experience in a supportive, educational environment.

All applicants must be law school graduates or should expect to graduate prior to the commencement of the clerkship term. Strong research and writing skills and a record of exceptional academic performance are required.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and transcripts to Brian Watts at 201 South Presidents Circle, Room 309, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112. Applications are due by September 30, 2007.

Attend the YLD Executive Council Meetings!

On the first Wednesday of each month, the Utah Young Lawyers Division holds its Executive Council Meeting. The primary purpose of this meeting is for the YLD officers and committee chairs to discuss and vote upon items that affect the young lawyers throughout the State.

However, this is certainly not a "closed-door" meeting. It is also a wonderful opportunity for any young lawyer to learn more about YLD and what YLD does. If you are interested in becoming more involved in YLD, this is a great chance to meet the officers and committee chairs, to listen to the different committees, and to hear about what types of activities/projects we have coming up. It is also a good opportunity to figure out what projects you may want to help with or what committee(s) you may want to join.

Next YLD Executive Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, 12:00 noon, at the Utah Law and Justice Center (645 South 200 East, Salt Lake City). Hope to see you there!
