Utah Bar Young Lawyers Division

On Saturday, January 19, 2013, the Utah State Bar graciously volunteered its offices as the Young Lawyers’ Division held its annual Mentoring Marathon and played host to almost 100 law students from the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. After a lively and informative opening panel of distinguished speakers, including the Honorable Augustus Chin, the students split into groups for question-and-answer sessions with legal practitioners at every level, including the judiciary, private practice, solo practice, and government, among others. Students also had the opportunity to meet with hiring partners from a variety of law firms for a one-on-one resume review session, which proved very quite popular with the students. Many YLD board members contributed their time and talents to this worthy endeavor, including President Kate Conyers (Salt Lake Legal Defenders), Jesse Nix (Salt Lake Legal Defenders), Roger Tsai (Holland & Hart), and Charles Perschon (Prince, Yeates & Geldzahler), all of whom received high marks and positive feedback from the law students. This event is consistently well-attended, and the YLD looks forward to hosting the Mentoring Marathon again in 2014.

On November 20, 2012, YLD hosted its first Section Night event. The purpose of the event was to introduce young lawyers to the benefits of joining other sections of the Utah State Bar as well as related bar organizations. Representatives from twenty-five sections and seven committees of the Bar attended the event and provided information to attendees. Representatives from the Salt Lake County Bar Association, Federal Bar Section, Women Lawyers of Utah, Utah Minority Bar Association, Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Utah State Law Library also attended the event. Young lawyers were able to sign up for sections they were interested in during the event. Young lawyers also had opportunities to mingle with the representatives and enjoy food and drinks. The event was successful and YLD will likely host the event again next May or August, 2013.

On November 17, 2012 the Young Lawyer Division of the Utah State Bar held a Wills for Heroes event at the Davis County Sheriff's Office in Farmington Utah.

On Saturday, October 20, 2012 we held our first Wills For Heroes event in the Uintah Basin. The event was held at the Vernal Police Department located at 374 E. Main, Vernal, UT 84078. The first responder contact for the event was Assistant Vernal Police Chief Keith Campbell. We had nine attorney volunteers at the event including Elizabeth, Kristin, and Blake from the Wills For HeroesCcommittee. Carma Harper from the Paralegal Division arranged our paralegals and witnesses for the event and Summer Shumway from the Bar provided our IT support. During the event we were able to assist approximately 30 first responders with their estate planning. The first responders, including Assistant Chief Campbell, were very appreciative and the event was a great success.

-Provide analytical support to existing portfolio companies and assist with transactions involving
portfolio companies
Candidate Profile:
- Outstanding undergraduate academic performance (GPA) with focus on Business, Finance,
Accounting, Economics, etc.
-Strong knowledge and familiarity with all aspects of finance and accounting
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
-Excellent written and oral communications skills

Come help the Young Lawyer's Division of Utah and Women Lawyers of Utah kick off YWCA's Week Without Violence. On Friday October 16, at 4 p.m., YLD and WLU will host a Walk Against Violence in Liberty Park. The Walk will include both a 5K Fun Run and a 1K High-Heel Challenge. The cost is $30, $15 for children under 12, and $10 for children in strollers. We will have t-shirts and prizes, including prizes for the business with the most participants. The proceeds from the event will benefit YWCA Salt Lake City.
