MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT ROBERT L. JEFFS
Unbundling Legal Services
Many people cannot afford to hire a lawyer for help with legal problems and many lawyers are looking for work. Limited scope representation or unbundled legal services is an affordable alternative for clients who are able to hire lawyers to provide pre-established specific services and enables lawyers to do meaningful work for some compensation. You can currently sign up to be listed on the Find a Utah Lawyer Directory and designate your willingness to provide limited legal work in up to four practice areas: Contracts, Divorce, Family Law, and Estate Planning. The directory will be expanded soon to include other areas. Limited scope representation has been approved by the Utah Supreme Court and is slowly becoming more popular as pro se litigants are seeking some outside help and clients recognize their ability to pay a limited amount for a discrete task. Rule 75 of the Utah Rules of Civil Procedure outlines the requirements for unbundled representation. Further, the Utah State Bar is providing a live CLE event on using unbundling to enhance your practice at this year’s Fall Forum and, additional unbundling information may be found at:
1.http://www.utahbar.org/LRS/limited_representation.html,

4.3 hour online self study CLE program: Limited Scope Representation Training (10/02/2009)
You may sign up for the Find a Utah Lawyer Directory at: http://www.utahbar.org/LRS/attorney_signup.html. Please consider providing limited scope representation. It will help you build your practice and will provide valuable services to a segment of the public who may otherwise be unable to employ an attorney.
