NEW ST. GEORGE COURTHOUSE TO OPEN DOORS DECEMBER 14

St. George, UT—The new Fifth Judicial District Courthouse is scheduled to open its doors for business at 206 Tabernacle on Monday, Dec. 14, 2009.

Since construction began in February 2008, work has been steady to build the 91,734 sq. ft., $29 million facility. The courthouse includes eight courtrooms for use by the district and juvenile courts. In addition, office space for district and juvenile courts, juvenile probation, the Office of Guardian ad Litem, and mediation is located in the courthouse.

The building is expandable and can accommodate up to eight additional courtrooms as the population and caseload in Washington County grows. The new courthouse has a secured holding facility for in-custody movement of prisoners as well as holding cells for prisoners that are adjacent to the courtrooms. This layout will prevent interaction between the prisoners and the public or staff.

The property for the courthouse was acquired by the state through a unique three-way trade between the state, city, and school district. Ownership of the current courthouse facility will be transferred to St. George Municipal.

Employees will move into the new courthouse Dec. 10 and 11. The court offices in the current courthouse will be closed all day Friday, Dec. 11. The telephone numbers for the new courthouse will remain the same.

VCBO Architects designed the Fifth Judicial District Courthouse. Okland Construction was the general contractor on the project.
