SLC attorney to head state bar

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah lawyers elected Salt Lake City attorney Stephen W. Owens president of the Utah State Bar which licenses, disciplines, and provides continuing legal educational programs for Utah's 10,000 resident and non-resident attorneys. The new officers and commissioners will be sworn in by Chief Justice Christine M. Durham, Utah Supreme Court, on Friday.
Owens, a partner in the firm of Epperson & Owens where his practice concentrates on defending medical malpractice actions, was first elected to the Utah Bar Commission in 2002 and has served on the Executive Committee and currently serves on the Ethics Advisory Opinion Committee. He was president of the Young Lawyers Division. He graduated from the University of Utah's S. J. Quinney College of Law where he received the Harry S. Truman National Scholarship for Leadership and Public Service.
Provo attorney Robert L. Jeffs was elected President-elect. Jeffs, a partner in the firm of Jeffs & Jeffs, P.C. where his practice concentrates on commercial and personal injury litigation, was first elected to the Utah Bar Commission in 2002 and currently serves on the Executive Committee, the Admissions Committee, and he formerly chaired the Operations Review Committee. Jeffs graduated from the Brigham Young University J. Reuben Clark Law School in 1984.
In the Third Division, Christian Clinger and James D. Gilson were both were re-elected. Clinger, founder of Clinger Lee Clinger, focuses his practice in the area of civil litigation, business law and estate planning. Gilson is a shareholder with Callister Nebeker &McCullough, practicing litigation.
In the Fourth Division, Thomas W. Seiler, was elected. He is a partner in the Provo law firm of Robinson, Seiler & Anderson LC where his practice concentrates on business and commercial litigation.
In the Fifth Division, Curtis Jensen was re-elected. Jensen is a shareholder of the firm of Snow Jensen & Reece in St. George where his practice concentrates on business, commercial and construction law.
The Commission also includes representatives from the Minority Bar Association, Young Lawyers Division, Women Lawyers of Utah, the deans of Utah's two law schools, two representatives to the American Bar Association, the Bar's appointment to the Utah Judicial Council, the Immediate Past President of the Bar and a representative from the Legal Assistants Division.
