Utah State Bar 2009 elections are now complete. Robert L. Jeffs has been elected as our new President-elect. Elected in the Third Division are Christian W. Clinger and James D. Gilson. We want to thank the fine lawyers who were willing to campaign and serve. We also want to thank all who voted and participated in the process. It is our duty now to get behind our representatives and get involved in the Bar programs and services. We will benefit greatly from your input.

Annual Survey of Bar Members - The Utah State Bar leadership is implementing an annual survey to help assess the performance of various Bar programs and services. This brief survey is composed of multiple choice questions and should only take a few minutes to complete. The survey will be available until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 18th, 2009. To participate in the anonymous survey, please contact onlineservices@utahbar.org, provide your bar number, and a link will be provided to you.

Licensing Forms - Licensing statements will be mailed in the coming weeks. To ensure proper delivery, please update your mailing address, if necessary, at www.myutahbar.org using your Casemaker login information. NOTE: The use of credit cards will be restricted to online licensing ONLY. Licensing forms mailed to the Utah State Bar must include a check payment. Credit cards will not be accepted on forms that are mailed in.

Nominations Sought for Summer Convention Awards - The Bar Commission is seeking nominations for Judge of the Year, Distinguished Lawyer of the Year, and Distinguished Section/Committee of the Year.

These awards honor those whose professionalism, public service and personal dedication have significantly enhanced the administration of justice, the delivery of legal services and the building up of the profession. Nominations must be submitted to Christy Abad, 645 South 200 East, Suite 310, Salt Lake City, UT 84111 or adminasst@utahbar.org, no later than Friday, May 15, 2009.

Women Lawyers Symposium - Please join Chief Justice Durham and Women Lawyers of Utah at a morning symposium to discuss the retention of women attorneys as a good business practice. Special Guests: Cynthia Calvert, co-director PAR at U of C Hastings College of Law and Blane R. Professional Services Tax - The Utah Tax Review Commission is undertaking a comprehensive study of the state's sales and use tax system. They are holding public hearings between June 8th and June 26th on issues surrounding a sales tax on services purchased by households including legal services. Hearings will be held in Salt Lake, Logan, St.George, Vernal, and Moab. Utah Tax Review Commission meeting dates may be found online at http://www.utahbar.org/prof_services_tax/. The hearings will focus on practical and implementation questions. We will let you know more information as it becomes available.

Service of Process - Beginning May 12, 2009, the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code will no longer accept service of process for business entities. Lawyers Needed to Network - The Young Lawyers Division will be holding their first social, in conjunction with the Utah Minority Bar Association, on May 6th at the Alta Club from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Lawyers with more than 5 years of practice are needed to help a small group of young attorneys.
