Legislative Proposal to Tax Legal Services

Dear Bar Member:

I am sending this special announcement to let you know that on Thursday, January 15th, the Utah Tax Review Commission will be receiving a report from its Sales and Use Tax Working Group which essentially recommends that the State impose a tax on professional services, including legal services. The meeting is at Room 445 of the State Capitol and begins at 9:00 am and may run until noon. It is likely that an interim subcommittee of the Legislature (Revenue and Taxation) will take up this issue later in 2009 for further study.

The Bar has significant concerns regarding this proposal and has prepared an initial response, a copy of which is hosted at the web address: http://www.utahbar.org/prof_services_tax/.This site also contains the Notice and Agenda for the meeting and recent media links regarding this issue. Bar leaders are attending the Thursday meeting and will continue to evaluate this ongoing concern.

I want to also take this opportunity to personally invite you to a free CLE at the State Capitol Building on Thursday, February 5th from 9:00 a.m. to noon in the Capitol Boardroom (2nd floor, East side). Seating is limited. Please register online at: https://utahbar.org/cle/events/registration/legislature.html. A box lunch will be provided and we hope you will take the opportunity to seek out and meet your elected representatives. The CLE will cover various legislative and political issues.

Sincerely,

Nate Alder
