MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT NATHAN D. ALDER
URGENT NEED: Lawyers and Court Personnel Food & Winter Clothing Drive

nate_alder_color.jpgYou don't need me to tell you that fallout from our current economic crisis is readily apparent in our neighborhoods. (see my recent opinion piece in the Salt Lake Tribune - www.sltrib.com/ci_11130076?IADID=Search-www.sltrib.com-www.sltrib.com.) With the great need in our community at the forefront of our minds and hearts, we are announcing an expansion of the Annual Food & Winter Clothing Drive. Utah Food Bank Services has had a 30% increase this year in requests for food without an increase in food donations. One way we can help end this crisis is by signing up with the Food Bank to do a food drive in our firms. Go to the Utah Food Bank website at www.utahfoodbank.org. Click on “Get Involved” and then “Host a Food Drive.” Scroll down and click on “To Get Started - Register your organization and drive online” and complete the simple on line registration form. Questions can be directed to Brenda Thompson (801) 887-1227.

An alternative to creating a food drive at your firm is to participate in the Annual Lawyers & Court Personnel Food & Winter Clothing Drive started by Leonard Burningham. On Friday, December 19th, bring donations to the Utah State Bar (645 S. 200 E., east side). Items needed include:

Food: oranges, apples & grapefruit; baby food & formula; canned juices, meats & vegetables; crackers; dry rice; beans & pasta; peanut butter; powdered milk; tuna (Note: Donated food must be commercially packaged and should be non-perishable.)

New & Used Winter & Other Clothing: boots & hats; gloves & scarves; coats & suits; sweaters, shirts &trousers. New or Used Items for Children: bunk beds & mattresses; cribs, blankets & sheets; children’s videos & books; stuffed animals Personal Care Kits: toothpaste & toothbrush; combs; soap; shampoo & conditioner; lotion; tissue; barrettes ponytail holders; towels & washcloths

E-Mail Scam Targeting Law Firms - Attorneys have fallen prey to a new email scam circulating that specifically targets law firms. Details of the scam, how attorneys are targeted, and the story of an Atlanta lawyer who narrowly escaped the fraud can be found at: http://www.abajournal.com/news/e_mail_scam_targeting_law_firms_ensnares_a_lawyer_in_atlanta/

The Complete Lawyer - The globalization of the legal industry is changing the skills lawyers need to succeed in practice. Thanks to technology, travel, and global business expansion, lawyers increasingly operate in a world of disappearing borders. Today it is common for lawyers in small and large firms to work with clients and agencies in other countries, deal with vendors around the world, and have co-workers or employees from different countries. In this practice environment, lawyers must be culturally competent—to operate effectively with people in other cultures.

This edition of The Complete Lawyer: Doing Business Internationally, offers insights from American and foreign lawyers on the do’s and don’ts of legal and cultural issues and working with lawyers and clients in other countries. For example:
