Utah Young Lawyers Division Honors

nate_alder_color.jpgOur Utah Young Lawyers Division was honored at the ABA YLD meetings held in New York City this past week. The Utah YLD received a First Place Award of Achievement recognizing the Utah YLD's overall projects and programming. They also received First Place Awards for their Newsletter and Single Service to the Bar Project for "Been There, Done That: Succeeding as a Woman Attorney" (Chairs: Wendy Petersen and Cheylynn Hayman). Another First Place Award was given for the YLD Mentoring Marathon (Chairs: Cheylynn Hayman and Su Chon) and a Second Place Award of Achievement for their Service to the Public for Tuesday Night Bar (Chairs: Kelly Latimer, Christina Micken and Matt Wride). Congratulations to the 2007-2008 Utah Young Lawyers Division Board and President Stephanie Pugsley for all of their efforts!! You have deservedly been recognized both at home and nationally for being spectacular.

  • Utah Lawyer Directory and LegalMatch - On July 1, 2008, the Utah State Bar created a new directory for lawyer referrals. Participation in the introductory "Find a Utah Lawyer Directory" is voluntary and free of charge. The directory as it provides the public with an on-line listing of each lawyer's name, address, admission date, law school and telephone number within specific geographic areas and practice types as identified by the search criteria. It includes a lawyer's email address only if specifically authorized. Lawyers are permitted to list up to 5 practice types. You may sign up for the "Find a Utah Lawyer Directory" at www.utahbar.org/LRS. LegalMatch - is an additional resource available to Utah attorneys to receive screened cases for potential new clients. Attorneys wishing to register with LegalMatch can access information through the Utah Bar Website at www.utahbar.org.

    Bar Commission Changes - The Commission appointed James D. Gilson to fill the remaining year of Nathan Alder's term as 3rd Division Commissioner. Mr. Gilson will join Lori Nelson, Rodney Snow and Rusty Vetter who were recently elected in to serve the 3rd Division. Herm Olsen will continue to represent the 1st Division and Stephen Owens will serve as President Elect.

    Summer Convention Awards - The Bar wishes to congratulate Judge Glenn K. Iwasaki who was selected as Judge of the Year and Charles R. Brown who was chosen as Lawyer of the Year. Each of these award recipients has a long history of professionalism, public service and personal dedication to the building up of the legal profession. Also given awards at the 2008 Summer Convention were the Admissions Committee and the Young Lawyers Division as Committee and Section of the year, respectively.     Tenth Circuit Conference - A fabulous program has been arranged for the Bench & Bar Conference to be held September 4-6, 2008 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Highlights of the conference will include Justice Stephen Breyer who will present a Supreme Court update and Erwin Chemerinsky reporting on the key cases during the recent term. Also scheduled to speak are Dr. Jim Loehr, a world renowned Performance Phsychologist whose clients are household names across America and Dr. Laurie Leshin of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center who will present an update on the search for life in the universe.     Mandatory CLE Rule Change - Effective January 1, 2008, the Utah Supreme Court adopted an amendment to the Rules and Regulations Governing Mandatory Continuing Legal Education to require that one of the three hours of “ethics or professional responsibility” be in the area of professionalism and civility.
