Election Results

Utah State Bar 2008 elections are now complete. Stephen Owens has been elected as our new President-elect. Elected in the Third Division are Lori Nelson, Rodney Snow and Rusty Vetter. We want to thank the fine lawyers who were willing to campaign and serve. We also want to thank all who voted and participated in the process. It is our duty now to get behind our representatives and get involved in the Bar programs and services. We will benefit greatly from your input.

Utah Lawyer Directory - On July 1, 2008, the Utah State Bar created a new directory for lawyer referrals. Participation in the introductory "Find a Utah Lawyer Directory" is voluntary and free of charge. The directory provides potential clients with an on-line listing of each lawyer's name, address, admission date, law school and telephone number within specific geographic areas and practice types as identified by the search criteria. It includes a lawyer's email address only if specifically authorized. Lawyers are permitted to list up to 5 practice types. You may sign up for the "Find a Utah Lawyer Directory" at www.utahbar.org/LRS.

Mandatory CLE Rule Change - Effective January 1, 2008, the Utah Supreme Court adopted an amendment to the Rules and Regulations Governing Mandatory Continuing Legal Education to require that one of the three hours of “ethics or professional responsibility” be in the area of professionalism and civility. To read the complete text of Rule 14-404, go to http://www.utcourts.gov/resources/rules/ucja/ch14/04%20mcle/usb14-404.html

LAST CHANCE - Summer Convention - This is your last chance to register and join us July 16 - 19 for what will surely be a memorable time. View the program and accommodation arrangements at www.utahbar.org/cle/annualconvention/brochure.pdf.

Women Lawyers Conducting Survey - Women Lawyers of Utah will circulate an anonymous survey this month to ALL Utah Bar admittees between 1985 and 2005 regarding their work life and career choices. The survey will serve to evaluate issues related to the retention and advancement of women in Utah law firms in conjunction with WLU’s “Initiative on the Advancement and Retention of Women”. This survey is part of a larger initiative to study retention and advancement. Your complete and honest response is crucial to the validity of the survey. Please look for mailings and e-mail on this survey later this month. If you have any questions or comments, please e-mail evefurse@yahoo.com.

CLE Notices - From time to time, you may receive notices via email from various CLE providers who are not associated with the Bar. We have not yet found a way to keep marketing firms from culling general email address and from sending email blasts to lawyers whose email addresses are public. We do not sell our email lists and will do our best to see that information you receive from the Bar is timely, appropriate and not invasive.

Member Benefit - REAL Probate System - Probate is a form driven practice that requires you assess the estate's needs, apply the rules, generate the appropriate documents, and file with the court --- all in an efficient and consistent fashion. Features include Informal and Formal Utah Probate Forms, Newly Revised Guardianship and Conservatorship Forms, Letters (interested parties, PR(s), creditors, attorneys, financial institutions, witnesses, estate assets, courts and government entities). The Real Probate System is based on H. Reese Hansen and Stanley D. Neeleman’s Utah Probate System 2nd edition . Click here http://www.reallawforms.com/site.php?op=content&contentid=636 to learn more.
