Self-Help Center to Continue Offering Services

SELF-HELP CENTER TO CONTINUE OFFERING SERVICES
Pilot Project to Continue through June 30, 2009

Salt Lake City, Utah— The Utah State Courts’ Self-Help Center pilot project has received additional funding that will allow the program to continue through June 30, 2009. The pilot project—which is underway in the second and eighth judicial districts—assists individuals who are representing themselves in court to better understand court processes. The project was initially scheduled to run through June 20, 2008.

Center staff provides legal information and forms via a toll-free telephone help line as well as e-mail. Help line hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The toll-free phone number is 888-683-0009 and the e-mail address is selfhelp@email.utcourts.gov. Information on a variety of self-help topics is available on the court’s Web site at www.utcourts.gov/howto.

The Self-Help Center’s services are available only to residents of the second and eighth judicial districts and to individuals whose cases originated in those districts. The Second Judicial District includes Davis, Weber, and Morgan counties, while the Eighth Judicial District includes Daggett, Duchesne, and Uintah counties.

The center’s staff is available to provide information about what to do before going to court, how to prepare paperwork for court, how to represent oneself in court, and what to do with an order issued by the court. Assistance is available in the areas of family law such as adoption, paternity, divorce, custody and child support, as well as domestic violence, guardianship/conservatorship, probate, landlord-tenant disputes, and small claims. Center staff also refer individuals to appropriate legal services providers and other community resources.
