Utah State Bar elections are in full swing. We will choose a President-elect and three Third District representatives in the coming weeks. Running for President-elect are: Stephen W. Owens and Scott R. Sabey. Seeking to represent those in the Third District are: Su Chon, Laurie Gilliland, James D. Gilson, Lori W. Nelson, Margaret Plane, Rodney G. Snow and Rusty Vetter. We want to thank the fine attorneys who are willing to balance their work load with service to our Bar. The vitality of the Bar and our success in fulfilling our mission is dependent upon concerned and qualified volunteers like these candidates who are willing to devote their time and energy. LAW DAY EVENTS
On May 1st, 2008, the Young Lawyers Division will again sponsor the annual Law Day Luncheon to be held at the Little America in Salt Lake City at 12:00 noon. The Young Lawyers Division Wills for Heroes program that helps emergency first responders and their families will be provided May 2nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the main UTA Office located at 3600 South 700 West in Salt Lake City. Utah attorneys will meet with the police officers to create free wills, living wills and other estate planning documents. The 2008 Law Day 5K Walk & Run is scheduled for May 3, 2008 at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney School of Law. The run is a casual day of fun for the legal community and their families. NEW PROFESSIONALISM COUNSELING PROGRAM - The Utah Supreme Court has created a professionalism counseling program for members of the Utah State Bar effective April 1, 2008. The Supreme Court has appointed Thomas Berggren, Hon. William B. Bohling, Robert S. Clark, Ellen Maycock, and Gayle F. McKeachnie to serve on the professionalism counseling board. COURTHOUSE CONSTRUCTION - The building entrances of the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse, located at 450 South State Street are being reconstructed. The construction will result in security enhancements as well as improved traffic flow. Construction is scheduled during the evenings and weekends to minimize delays; however, court users are encouraged to plan extra time when coming to the courthouse. Construction to the west entrance began on March 17 and is scheduled to be completed by April 8. The east entrance construction will begin on March 31 and is expected to be finished by May 22. ANNUAL AWARDS - The Board of Bar Commissioners is seeking nominations for the 2008 Annual Convention Awards. These awards have a long history of honoring publicly those whose professionalism, public service and personal dedication have significantly enhanced the administration of justice, the delivery of legal services and the building up of the profession. Your award nominations must be submitted in writing to Christy Abad, Executive Secretary, 645 South 200 East, Suite 310, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, no later than Friday, April 18, 2008. The award categories include Judge of the Year, Distinguished Lawyer of the Year and Distinguished Section/Committee of the year.
