"The Graying of Lawyers" July/Aug Issue of The Complete Lawyer
250,000 of America's practicing lawyers are over 55 years of age. That number will triple in the next two decades. As many of us get older we experience age-related mental impairment. One out of 8 people age 65 and older suffers from Alzheimer's. While most older lawyers are "dementia free," others experience declining mental acuity that reduces competence and diligence. With these escalating statistics comes the risk that a growing number of lawyers will unwittingly provide inadequate service to their clients.
This issue of The Complete Lawyer looks at the aging of the profession: What ethical obligations arise when mental impairment due to age-related conditions (such as Alzheimer's, senility or dementia) affects the ability of a lawyer to meet his professional responsibility? How can we preserve the dignity of aging colleagues? How do we continue to benefit from their wisdom and experience? Finally, if how we age is at least partially under our control, as breakthroughs in neuropsychological research indicates, what should we be doing to stay mentally and physically fit?
