Nominations Sought for UDDE Board

The Bar Commission is soliciting nominees to serve on the Utah Deception Detection Examiners Board. The Board is appointed by the Director of the Department of Occupational and Professional Licensing in the Utah Department of Commerce under Utah Code Section 58-64-201 and includes a representative from the Bar. The board assists the division in the regulation of instruments used in the detection of deception and examiners who engage in such examinations. Resumes of interested lawyers should be sent to Christy Abad at christy.abad@utahstatebar.org or 645 South 200 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111 by April 17, 2007.

Bar Commission and President-elect Elections Update

This year all open seats for the Board of Bar Commissioners have only one candidate running per seat. Therefore no elections will be held. The candidates for each Division will take office following the Annual Convention in July. These include: Second Division - Felshaw King (King & King). Third Division - Scott R. Sabey (Fabian & Clendenin) and Yvette Donosso Diaz (Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough). Nathan D. Alder (Christensen & Jensen) is running unopposed for President-elect. Ballots for a President-elect retention election will be sent out the first week of April. Mr. Alder's campaign statement and biography is available here: www.utahbar.org/elections/.

"What's in a Name?" New Name for the Solo, Small Firm and Rural Section

Having lived with the longer name that's not just right, perhaps too long, too stuffy, too limiting, and after speaking with Section members, we have come to two conclusions. First, the current name of our Section says who we are but does not seem to speak to our "members." Second, it will take all of us to come up with a new name for our Section that works for us as a group. Who are we? Clearly all solo attorneys. Who is that? A law firm/department of one, corporate counsel, private counsel, regulatory counsel? Would that also include many if not all "of counsel" What is a Small Firm? That would mean any firm of less than 16 attorneys. What is a Rural Firm? Any attorney or firm of any size that is not along the Wasatch Front seems to be a nice clean definition. These definitions may not work for you. If so let us know what you think they ought to be. Having broached the subject of who we are; what do we call ourselves? We want to be inclusive of all our "members" but not be cumbersome at the same time. "Independent Attorneys" and "Statewide Lawyer Network Section" have been suggested. In order to address this question we are having a contest; the person(s) offering the selected name will have section dues paid for the year. Please submit your suggestions to: dbkimsey@gmail.com by April 30, 2007. Thank you for your support.

The Complete Lawyer: The Fast Changing Face of Diversity

Change is one of the most onerous challenges human beings grapple with. Diversity, for example, is hard to achieve because change is at its heart. This edition of TCL examines diversity from the perspectives of psychology, biology and brain science. While research tells us we have a long way to go with our efforts to institute lasting diversity initiatives, the heartening news is that as humans we have a built-in bias towards empathy, cooperation and altruism-provided we develop the social intelligence to nurture these capacities in ourselves and others. The Utah State Bar brings you this issue of The Complete Lawyer magazine (www.thecompletelawyer.com/volume3/issue2/index.php). The cover story in this issue asks the question, "How can groups divided by prejudice learn to live and work together effectively?" As experts like Daniel Goleman report, we are "wired to connect" and are designed for sociability. As always, we welcome your feedback and ideas.
