Registrations will be accepted at the Bar offices through November 2, 2006 and accepted at the door on a space available basis. The Bar’s 75th Anniversary Celebration - Clarence Darrow: Causes, Crimes and the Courtroom

Come and see a spellbinding and realistic portrait of Clarence Darrow and his deeply held beliefs and hard fought courtroom battles on the evening of November 9, 2006. This entertaining and educational program will cover the Darrow experience from the Loeb and Leopold case to the "Scopes Monkey Trial". Held in the historic and interesting Masonic Temple, the program includes optional tours for those who come early. After the Darrow portrait, a panel of recognized lawyers and judges will explore the issues and ethics raised in the program. Pre-program tours will run from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Then the program will run from 6:30 to 8:30, followed by the panel. There is special pricing for groups of 3 or more so clients and family are encouraged to attend. Complete program information can be found at: www.utahbar.org/cle/events/clarence_darrow.html.

New House Counsel License Status

The Utah State Bar is initiating a new license status that allows lawyers working in-house in Utah and not currently licensed in Utah to obtain a limited license to practice in their workplace in accordance with new court rules governing the practice of law in Utah. This new status also allows attorneys to become affiliate members of the Utah State Bar. If you are aware of any lawyers who may fit this circumstance, please have them contact the Bar to learn more and submit an application. Information about the new House Counsel status can be found at: www.utahbar.org/admissions/rule20.html.

Third & Fourth District Court Nominating Commission Openings

The Utah State Bar is seeking applications from lawyers to serve on the Third and Fourth District Trial Court Nominating Commissions. These Commissions nominate candidates to fill vacancies on the district and juvenile courts for these respective districts. To serve on a Commission you must be a citizen of the U.S. and resident of the respective district. Those interested in serving should submit a resume by January 15, 2007 to John C. Baldwin, Executive Director, by e-mail to john.baldwin@utahbar.org or by mail to: 645 South 200 East, SLC, UT 84111. Please identify your political party affiliation with your submission.

New Utah Litigation Support Users Group Meeting

The newly formed Utah Litigation Users Support Group (ULSUG) is up and running. This group is intended to help lawyers and litigation support staff learn about new tools and technologies for managing litigation. With the new Federal Court rules on e-discovery coming into effect (December 2006), this group provides an excellent forum for learning and sharing ideas on dealing with the ever growing volume of electronic information in litigation. The next meeting of the group is November 30, 2006 at noon and will cover trial presentation software (Sanction). To RSVP for this event being held at the offices of Jones Waldo, please send an e-mail to: cynthia@markandassociates.com.
