2006 Fall Forum Awards
The Board of Bar Commissioners is seeking nominations for the 2006 Fall Forum Awards. These awards have a long history of honoring publicly those whose professionalism, public service, and personal dedication have significantly enhanced the administration of justice, the delivery of legal services, and the building up of the profession. The award categories include: 1) Distinguished Community Member Award, 2) Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year, & 3) Professionalism Award. Your award nominations must be submitted in writing to Christy Abad, Executive Secretary, Utah State Bar, 645 South 200 East, #310, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, no later than Monday September 18, 2006. Lawyer Support Group Established
A support group for lawyers and other legal professionals has recently been established. The purpose of this lawyers’ group is to provide a SAFE AND CONFIDENTIAL place for lawyers to talk about anxiety, stress, burnout, depression and other issues. The group meets in an AA format - first names only and whatever information shared is confidential. You can come and speak or come and listen. The next meeting will take place on September 13th, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City @ 115 S. Main Street, fifth floor conference room, Salt Lake Community College, Main Street Campus. Fifth Annual “Bar Sharks For Justice” Pool Tournament
Sponsored by CIT Bank and the Young Lawyers Division, the “Bar Sharks For Justice” Pool Tournament will be held October 19, 26 and November 2, beginning each night at 6 p.m. at Lumpy’s Downtown at 145 Pierpont Ave in Salt Lake City. Lumpy’s is a private club, so you must be 21 or older to attend. Membership fees are waived for all our guests. "Bar Sharks for Justice" also serves as a social and networking event. If you are not on a team, come cheer on your favorite players and meet other young (and not so young) members of the legal community while contributing to a great cause. Minority Bar Annual Banquet – October 20, 2006
The Utah Minority Bar Association’s 2006 theme for its annual banquet is “Celebrating Diversity in the Law.” The keynote speaker is Dean Hiram Chodosh, new dean for the S.J. Quinney School of Law. New Presiding Judges in 1st, 4th and 5th Districts
The First, Fourth and Fifth District Courts have announced new presiding judges. Serving as presiding judges through June 30, 2008 are the following: First District Court - Judge Thomas L. Willmore. Fourth District Court - Judge Anthony Schofield and Judge Sterling B. Sainsbury for the Juvenile Court. Fifth District - Judge Michael Westfall and Judge Thomas M. Higbee for the Juvenile Court. Presiding judges are responsible for implementation and enforcement of statutes, rules, policies, and directives of the Judicial Council as they pertain to the administration of the courts. The presiding judges are responsible for assigning cases and judges and are elected by a majority vote of the judges of their court.
