2006 Law Day Luncheon, May 1, 2006 "Separate Branches - Balanced Powers"
The Young Lawyers Division of the Utah State Bar announces the 2006 Law Day Luncheon to be held on May 1 at 12:00 noon at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City. The keynote speaker for his year's event is the Honorable Carolyn McHugh of the Utah Court of Appeals. Tables for the event are available for $300, individual registrations are $30. Law Day Essay Contest
The Law Day Essay contest is sponsored by the Utah Minority Bar Association and open to Utah high school juniors and seniors. First Place Prize for the contest is $100 and recognition at the Law Day Luncheon. Utah lawyers are asked to encourage any seniors or juniors you know to enter. The theme for the contest is "Liberty Under Law - Separate Branches, Balanced Powers." Entries should be sent to umbalaw@comcast.net and must be received by April 23, 2006. Art and The Law Contest
On April 20th, the Salt Lake County Bar Association will hold the judging for its annual Art and the Law contest in connection with Law Day at the offices of Snell & Wilmer L.L.P. This year's theme is "Separate Branches, Balanced Powers." The distinguished panel of judges includes Judge Christine Decker, Judge Royal Hansen, Judge Stephen Henroid, Judge Gregory Orme and Judge L.A. Dever. Students from grades fourth through eighth from six Salt Lake County area elementary and middle schools have submitted entries.
Mock Trial Competition Update
This year 39 junior high and 37 high school teams participated in the 26th Annual Utah Statewide Mock Trial Competition in courtrooms throughout the state. Each team participated at least once as the prosecution and once as the defense while being judged by a panel of two attorneys and one community representative. On April 4, the Judge Memorial Catholic High School team prevailed in the State Championship held in the Utah Court of Appeals courtroom at the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse in Salt Lake City. Judge Memorial will represent Utah at the National High School Mock Trial Competition in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on May 11-14, 2006. The Junior High School Championship round will be held on Tuesday, April 18, when Central Davis Junior High School and Kaysville Junior High School will compete. Both Champion teams will be honored at the Law Day Luncheon on May 1st
“and Justice for All” Law Day 5K Run & Walk
Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 6, in front of the S.J. Quinney College of Law at 8:00 a.m. for the 2006 Law Day Run. This annual event benefits “and Justice for All,” a collaboration of Utah’s providers of free civil legal aid. The registration fee is $22 (before April 25) and $25 after that. There are a number of race divisions, designed to meet everyone’s competitive and creative need. Categories range from the Speed Team to the Chaise Lounge Division.
