2005 Annual Convention in Sun Valley – July 13-16
This year’s Annual Convention features some excellent keynote speakers. On Thursday morning we start off with Sean Carter, a lawyer turned legal humorist who will share his experiences about life in the law and the never-ending battle to find the work-life balance. Friday we will hear from the esteemed Kermit Hall, President, University of Albany, State University of New York (and former President of Utah State University). Mr. Hall will share with us his views on the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the challenge of openness in the federal government. These session and many timely breakout programs and events make the Annual Convention a great CLE value and a fun getaway for you and your family. Licensing Season – Online Option
The last of the annual Licensing Forms will be mailed out June 13. On June 10th the online forms will be available for use. These online forms will allow you to complete your annual licensing over the Internet. You will need your login and password that you currently use for the Casemaker service. To secure a login and password you need to have an e-mail address on record with the Bar. You can provide or update address information with the Bar online at: www.utahbar.org/forms/member_address_change.html. If you have any difficulties accessing the online form from the web site (www.utahbar.org), you can contact the Bar at onlineservices@utahbar.org.
Bar Election Results
The Utah State Bar is pleased to announce the results of the recent elections for President-Elect and for Bar Commission seats in the First and Third Divisions. Augustus (Gus) Chin will assume the office of President-Elect for 2005-2006 and will be sworn in one year later as the Utah State Bar President for 2006-2007. Lori W. Nelson, Stephen W. Owens and Rodney G. Snow from the Third Division have each been elected to serve on the Bar Commission for three-year terms. Herm Olsen ran uncontested in the First Division and will assume the three-year seat for that Division in July.
UMBA First 50 Dinner
The Utah Minority Bar Association is proud to announce that it will host a gala dinner and program on the evening of October 15, 2005 at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City to honor the first fifty lawyers of color (the "First 50") to practice law in the State of Utah. This will take the place of the annual UMBA scholarship banquet. As this is a truly statewide celebration, UMBA is sending this announcement via the e-bulletin and Bar Journal to reach all members of the Bar. The First 50 honorees hailed from, and practiced in, many communities throughout Utah. E-Discovery Resource
A great resource for lawyers dealing with e-discovery issues is available at: www.discoveryresources.org/index.html. This site includes news, articles and links to other e-discovery content. Currently included is a link to the Proposed Amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. These proposed rules were posted on May 11, 2005 and include numerous modifications related to the discovery of electronically stored information.

During the 2005 special session, the Utah Legislature passed H.B. 1003, which directs the Administrative Office of the Courts to solicit requests for proposals and award grants to nonprofit legal assistance providers to provide legal assistance throughout the state to: (1) low to moderate income victims of domestic violence; and(2) low to moderate income individuals in family law matters.
The Legislature appropriated $100,000.00 to implement the legislation. The funds may be awarded through a single grant or to multiple grantees.
The Administrative Office of the Courts has prepared a Request for Proposal (RFP #LAG1001) to solicit proposals from those who meet the criteria of the statute. Interested legal assistance providers may obtain a copy of the RFP by contacting either Mark Jones (578-3971, markj@e-mail.utcourts.gov) or Brent Johnson (578-3817, brentj@email.utcourts.gov). Proposals are due by June 10, 2005 at 5:00 p.m.
