Annual Convention Date Closing In

This year?s convention includes an impressive list of keynote speakers including Michael Young, the recently appointed, incoming President of the University of Utah. Bar Voting Deadline

The deadline for voting for Bar Commissioners and President-Elect is approaching. All ballots need to be in the Bar offices by 5:00 p.m. on June 1st. Please contact Maud Thurman at 801.297.7031 or maud.thurman@utahbar.org with any questions about the vote. All active members of the Bar are encouraged to vote.

Judicial Nominating Commission Applicants Sought

The Bar is seeking applications for lawyers to serve on the trial court nominating commissions for the 5th, 6th and 7th judicial districts and for the Appellate Court Nominating Commission. Applicants for the district nominating commissions must reside in the respective districts. The commissions nominate candidates for the various judgeships in the district, juvenile and appellate courts. The Bar submits names to the Governor's Office, which makes the appointments. Send applications to John C. Baldwin, Executive Director, Utah State Bar, 645 South 200 East, SLC, UT 84111 or e-mail them to john.baldwin@utahbar.org. Applications must include political party affiliation and be submitted by June 30, 2004.

Bar Signs with Casemaker

On April 30th, the Utah State Bar signed to join the Casemaker Consortium. Casemaker is an online legal research tool that will be offered as a free member benefit. The Bar is now on a 6 to 9 month track for bringing this service online and making it available to the membership. New Admission Rule For Military Lawyers

The Utah Supreme Court has signed into effect Rule 11-303, of the Supreme Court Rules of Professional Practice-or ELAP-allowing qualified military lawyers who are stationed in Utah, but not licensed to practice law in Utah, to provide free legal services to military personnel and their dependents. The court approved the new rule under its emergency rule making authority, with an effective date of May 4, 2004. To see the complete rule - www.utcourts.gov/resources/rules/comments/.
