The Utah Environmental Congress (UEC) seeks a motivated, self-starter, ‘renaissance individual’ to direct (50%) and provide legal assistance (50%) to our small grassroots environmental nonprofit. Individual must possess principled environmental ethics and unwavering support for grassroots forest advocacy. Founded in 1998, the UEC is based in Salt Lake City, Utah and works to protect and restore National Forests, native species, and watersheds throughout Utah.
Applicants must have a law degree and be licensed to practice law in Utah, and should ideally have a background in environmental law or public administration with experience in National Forest advocacy. The Attorney portion of the position will help develop UEC’s National Forest litigation. Applicants must have at least three years of related experience in environmental or administrative law.
The Executive Director portion of the position supervises 2 full time employees, writes grants to foundations, does accounting and prepares financial reports, pays bills including payroll and monthly tax deposits, is responsible for raising an annual budget of $250,000, is the spokesperson for the organization, and should have experience working with the media.
Applicants should be familiar with public land natural resource issues, the US Forest Service policy and procedures, and federal environmental laws affecting National Forests and wildlife. Applicants must have strong administrative skills including supervisory and fundraising; excellent writing and oral communication skills; and a deep commitment to protecting National Forests, roadless areas, old growth, native species, and watersheds. Individual must be capable of and willing to do whatever job is necessary in running this small nonprofit.
The UEC is Utah’s only statewide National Forest advocacy organization. We are principled, assertive, and possess a skilled and dedicated staff. We have established legal precedents in both Utah District Court as well as the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. We have thoroughly surveyed 6 million of the 8 million acres of Utah’s National Forests, including every roadless area, and have documented Utah’s National Forests with over 70,000 photographs demonstrating impacts as well as pristine areas. We are proposing a statewide National Forest wilderness bill that includes the most biologically significant areas for wildlife. We NEVER cut political deals at the expense of the environment. We provide a strong voice for the wildlife, trees, water and soil that are counting on us to represent them.
The position is located in Salt Lake City, UT, is full time, salary range up to $40,000 DOE plus generous benefit package, and the position reports to the BOD.
